The House Martin Colony Tower with 18 Nesting Bowls is a large-capacity, pole-mounted nesting structure designed to support established or replacement colonies. It provides eighteen pre-assembled artificial nesting bowls within a single elevated unit, offering immediate nesting opportunities in locations where traditional nest sites have been lost.
Mounted on a 6-metre galvanised, thick-walled steel mast, the tower positions nests at height in open airspace, reflecting the species’ natural nesting preferences. It is particularly suited to mitigation and compensation projects and is most effective when installed close to an existing house martin colony.
Construction
The nesting head is built on a metal frame and finished with exterior plywood. It is treated with a spray cork coating and finished in Ecolabel paint (RAL 9010). The roof is covered with black roofing leather to provide weather protection. When correctly installed, the structure is designed to withstand wind forces up to Beaufort scale 10.
- 18 pre-assembled artificial nesting bowls
- Mounted on a 6m galvanised steel mast
- Metal frame with exterior plywood finish
- Spray cork coating with Ecolabel paint (RAL 9010)
- Roof finished with black roofing leather
- Designed for long-term outdoor installation
Siting Guidance
- Install at least 1–1.5 metres into the ground (depending on soil conditions)
- Best positioned near an existing house martin colony
- Maintain a clear, unobstructed flight path
- A nearby mud source can encourage natural nest building and maintenance
- Prickly vegetation may be used around the base to deter vandalism (ensure it does not obstruct access)
Quick-set concrete and stabilising supports are supplied to assist with installation. Professional installation services may be available on request.
Maintenance
The artificial nests are fixed in place and cannot be removed. If sparrows have occupied the bowls, some nesting material can be removed through the entrance opening. Otherwise, the tower requires minimal maintenance. Repainting of the nesting head may be carried out after several years if required.
