The House Sparrow Colony Tower is a large pole-mounted nesting structure designed to provide multiple nesting opportunities for colonial species such as house sparrows (Passer domesticus). With 18 individual nesting chambers under one roof, the tower creates a suitable breeding environment for sparrow colonies where natural nesting sites are limited.

This type of structure is particularly useful for ecological mitigation and compensation projects where nesting sites have been lost due to renovation or new construction. The design follows the dimensional guidance outlined in the BIJ12 knowledge document for house sparrows.

Colony Nesting Design

  • 18 separate nesting chambers
  • Entrance holes: 35 mm diameter
  • Designed to support colonial nesting behaviour
  • Suitable for installation in urban, suburban and rural environments

When installed in farmland or rural locations, the tower may also be used by tree sparrows (Passer montanus). Other small cavity-nesting birds such as tits may occasionally occupy the chambers.

Construction

The tower is built around a robust metal frame and finished with exterior-grade plywood panels treated with environmentally responsible Ecolabel paint (RAL 9010). The roof is covered with black roofing slate and includes a secondary roof structure that improves ventilation and helps prevent overheating during warm weather.

  • Metal structural frame
  • Exterior FSC® wood panels
  • Ecolabel exterior paint finish
  • Ventilated roof design
  • Black roofing slate covering

When properly installed, the tower is designed to withstand wind speeds up to Beaufort scale 10.

Installation

The colony tower is supplied with a galvanised steel mast measuring 6 metres in length. The mast includes a ground section for secure installation.

  • Galvanised thick-walled steel mast (6 m)
  • Ground installation system included
  • Supplied with quick-set concrete for installation
  • Temporary supports included to stabilise the mast during curing

The mast should typically be installed 1–1.5 metres into the ground depending on soil conditions. Establishing prickly vegetation around the base can help discourage vandalism.

Siting Guidance

The tower can be installed wherever sparrows are present, including towns, villages, parks, gardens, farmland and industrial sites. For successful occupancy, the surrounding habitat should provide:

  • Nearby food sources
  • Access to water
  • Dense shrubs or hedges for cover
  • Areas of bare ground for dust bathing

Sparrows may use the tower throughout the year, including outside the breeding season.

Maintenance

Each nesting chamber can be accessed from the front for inspection or cleaning by removing two screws from the front panels. Aside from occasional repainting of the tower head if required, the structure generally requires minimal maintenance.
