The Pole Mounted Large Colony Bat Box provides a flexible solution for creating bat roosting habitat where no suitable buildings or trees are available. Designed for open locations such as field edges, hedgerows or development sites, it allows you to position the roost in the most favourable conditions for bat activity and thermal performance.
Available as either a single box or a double (back-to-back) configuration, this system enables the creation of varied microclimates, supporting a wider range of roosting preferences throughout the year.
Key Features
- Ideal where buildings or mature trees are not available
- Can be positioned for optimal solar gain and exposure
- Available as single or double (back-to-back) box configuration
- Double option provides varied thermal conditions for bat choice
- Supplied with 4m, 5m or 6m metal pole, or banding option for existing poles
- Durable construction using FSC certified exterior grade plywood
- Non-toxic, water-based wood treatment for long-term outdoor use
Design and Function
The large colony box features multiple internal crevices, providing suitable roosting spaces for bats. In the double configuration, the two boxes face different directions, creating contrasting temperature profiles. This allows bats to move between roosts depending on weather conditions and seasonal requirements.
Installation
The pole-mounted system allows precise placement in open or unshaded areas, helping to maximise solar exposure where required. Typically, around 1 metre of the pole should be set below ground for stability, although this will depend on site-specific ground conditions and professional advice should be sought where necessary.
For ease of transport and installation, the pole is supplied separately from the bat box and fixing system. The box is attached using a rail/screw/clip system, requiring only basic tools.

Pole Mounted Bat Boxes are an ideal solution when there is no suitable building or tree available on which to mount the bat box. They can also be used to ensure that box gets maximum solar gain by placing it in an unshaded spot or if you want to position the bat box on a hedgerow. We offer the Large Colony Bat Box as either single boxes or double boxes mounted back to back on the same pole. The back to back boxes have the advantage that the two boxes will differ in solar gain and resultant thermal regimes. Bats can then choose the box which offers the optimal conditions and are likely to vary which box they use through the year.
To securely install your Pole Mounted Bat Box usually requires around 1m of the pole to be buried below ground, however we would always advise you consult your builder or structural engineer as ground conditions vary from site to site.
For ease of installation and shipping, the pole will be dispatched separately from the bat box and bracket. Apart from erecting the pole, the only tool needed is a spanner (or a screwdriver for the metal band version) to fix the boxes onto the pole.
