The Schwegler 1FE Bat Access Panel is a maintenance-free access unit designed to retain and protect existing bat roosting spaces within buildings during renovation, conversion, or insulation works. Particularly suited to older and historic buildings, the 1FE allows bats continued access to established wall cavities while helping maintain roost continuity during building upgrades.

The unit features an open-backed design, enabling bats to access existing voids within walls. With a depth of just 80mm, it can be easily integrated into masonry, insulation systems, or rendered facades with minimal visual impact. Installation of multiple units is recommended where larger roosting opportunities are required.

Manufactured from durable SCHWEGLER wood-concrete, the 1FE provides excellent weather resistance, thermal stability, and a rough internal surface to assist bats with grip and access.

  • Material: SCHWEGLER wood-concrete
  • External Dimensions: 30 x 30 x 8cm
  • Weight: Approximately 5.1kg
  • Includes: Entry cover only (fixings not included)

Key Features

  • Designed to retain access to existing wall roosts during renovation or insulation works
  • Open rear allows continued use of internal wall cavities by bats
  • Suitable for integration into masonry, insulation, or rendered facades
  • Shallow 80mm depth for discreet installation
  • Manufactured from durable SCHWEGLER wood-concrete
  • Maintenance-free design
  • Suitable for retrofit and conservation projects
  • Can be surface mounted or built into the wall structure

Optional Accessory

The optional Schwegler 1FE Back Panel converts the unit into a standalone bat box by creating an enclosed internal roost chamber.

Suitable Species

Building-dwelling bat species.

Siting

The 1FE should be installed at least 3 metres above ground level with a clear, unobstructed flight path for approaching and departing bats. It can be built into exterior walls or fixed directly to masonry using suitable screws and plugs.

The shallow profile allows easy incorporation into insulation layers or brickwork. Care should be taken to avoid creating access into breathable roofing membranes or unsuitable building voids.

Positioning close to existing bat access points, feeding routes, or known roost locations will improve the likelihood of occupation.

Maintenance

The 1FE is maintenance free. Droppings fall naturally from the entrance opening, so routine cleaning is not required.

Why protect bat roosts?

Bats and their roosts are protected under UK wildlife legislation. Renovation and insulation works can result in the loss of important roosting spaces within buildings, particularly in older structures. Integrated access panels such as the 1FE help retain existing roost opportunities while allowing building improvement works to proceed sensitively.

MATERIAL: Woodcrete

DIMENSIONS (MM): 300 x 300 x 80

WEIGHT (KG): 5.1

INCLUDES: Entry cover without fixing material.

SPECIES: Building-inhabiting Bat species.

SITING: Build-in to or fix against an exterior wall (fixings not included). Be careful not to allow access to breathable roofing membranes. We recommend a ladder to install the unit at the top of the building (at least 3 meters above ground) so that bats are more likely to find the access and the panel will be safe from tampering. The ideal aspect is so the box receives some sun during the day. If it is on an existing feeding or flight route and provides access to an existing next, you are more likely to get usage. Please ensure there is a clear flight path for the approach and departure.

MAINTENANCE: Maintenance-free. No cleaning required as droppings fall away through the front opening.
