The Schwegler 3FF Bat Colony Box is a self-cleaning flat bat colony box developed from the tried and tested Schwegler 1FF Bat Box. It is designed as a universal roost for a wide range of bat species, offering a larger internal space with different hanging zones to suit changing temperatures and seasonal roosting needs.
The enlarged interior allows bats to move between hanging areas internally. In cooler weather, bats can cluster more closely together, while in warmer conditions they have enough space to spread out and select a suitable position within the roost.
Two versions are available: with or without an inspection hatch. If increased inspection frequency is planned, the version with the additional inspection hatch is recommended. The hatch allows the full interior to be checked with a mirror or torch where inspection is required for monitoring, functional or scientific purposes. The version without the hatch cannot be fully examined without opening the front panel.

Suitable Species
The Schwegler 3FF is suitable for Soprano Pipistrelle bats and a wide range of other species. The additional larger hanging space can also support species that tend to roost in cave-like spaces, such as Noctule bats.
The 3FF is designed for use during the active bat season, including nursery, transition and mating roost use. It is not intended as a hibernation box.
Siting & Installation
Install the Schwegler 3FF at a height of 3m or above on trees, posts, hunting hides or walls. Bat boxes should ideally be positioned in open, sunny locations with a clear flight path to the entrance.
The box is supplied with a galvanised steel hanger and aluminium nail for installation.
Inspection & Maintenance
The 3FF is self-cleaning, with droppings falling freely from the underside of the box. This helps prevent the entrance from becoming blocked, even where the box is densely occupied.
Where fitted, the inspection hatch allows the interior to be checked with a mirror or torch without opening the full front panel. Any inspection must only be carried out by a suitably licensed bat worker and only when appropriate.
