The Schwegler 1WQ Summer and Winter Bat Roost is a façade-mounted, all-year-round bat box designed for building-dwelling species. Thanks to its insulated double-panel system, the 1WQ provides suitable conditions for both summer maternity colonies and winter hibernation.
Developed from Schwegler’s proven winter roost technology, the 1WQ combines insulation with breathability to maintain a stable internal microclimate over many years. It is suitable for installation on a wide range of buildings and is designed to support safe colony formation in summer and secure overwintering.
Design & Construction
The 1WQ features a patented two-piece design. The lower section is fixed to the façade first, then enclosed with the upper section (bearing the bat silhouette), concealing the mounting screws once installed.
Internally, the roost incorporates structured niches arranged in a labyrinth-style layout, creating multiple hanging and sheltering spaces suited to bats in different seasonal conditions.

Material
Manufactured from weather-resistant, breathable lightweight concrete, the 1WQ is designed for long-term outdoor installation. All metal components in contact with bats are rustproof. The roost is supplied with a light-grey weather-resistant coating and may be repainted using a breathable masonry paint if colour matching is required.

Siting & Installation
- Install at a minimum height of 3 metres
- Ensure clear approach and departure routes
- Suitable for brick, concrete or timber façades

The roost is supplied with four screws and plugs suitable for standard masonry and concrete walls. For timber installations, screws may be used without plugs. Always check the suitability of fixings for the specific substrate.
Maintenance
The 1WQ is self-cleaning and does not require routine maintenance.

COLOUR: The 1WQ is supplied with a weather-resistant, light-grey coating. If necessary, it can be adjusted using a standard breathable façade paint, for example, to match the substrate colour. Please only use breathable concrete paint, as otherwise, the function of the roost can be limited.
SPECIES: Typical house-dwelling bat species are, among others: common pipistrelle, serotine, particoloured bats and, provided corresponding distributions exist in the roost installation site, noctules or Bechstein’s bats.
SITING: From 3 m and higher. Ensure unobstructed approach and departure options. Suitable locations: Any type of buildings, regardless of whether they are built from concrete, brick, or timber. Also suitable in and on historical walls, road structures, industrial buildings, or residential houses.
The twp-piece roost is installed using the four screws/plugs supplied. These are designed for standard masonry and concrete walls. Use the screws without plugs for installation on wooden walls/beams. Note: Please check the suitability of the fixings provided on-site, as particular building materials may need another screw/plug combination.
