Schwegler 2HW Deep Bird Nest Box

The Schwegler 2HW Deep Bird Nest Box is designed for cavity and recess-nesting birds that prefer an open, balcony-style entrance. Its deep Woodcrete construction and removable wooden nesting chamber insert help protect nesting birds from predators such as magpies and jays.

This box is particularly suitable for siting in relatively dark locations, where the wide entrance can help encourage quick occupation. It can be installed on open sites, against outside walls or on trees, and may also be used near running water for species such as Dippers and Grey Wagtails when the wooden insert is removed.

Suitable Species

The Schwegler 2HW is suitable for Black Redstart, Pied Wagtail, Spotted Flycatcher, and occasionally Robin and Wren. It can also be used to attract Dippers and Grey Wagtails if installed near natural running water or under bridges, with the wooden insert removed.

Siting

This particularly deep nest box can be hung in an open position, against an outside wall or on a tree. The design allows for installation in more exposed locations, as the nesting chamber is set back within the box to help reduce predator access.

For Dippers and Grey Wagtails, the box should be sited close to natural running water or beneath bridges. The wooden nesting insert should be removed for these species.

Maintenance

The wooden nesting chamber insert can be removed for inspection and cleaning. Cleaning should be carried out outside the breeding season, once the box is no longer occupied.
