The Sand Martin Nest Box is designed to provide an artificial nesting tunnel for sand martins, helping to recreate the nesting conditions these birds naturally seek in sandy riverbanks, quarries, and cliffs. Manufactured from durable WoodStone®, FSC® wood, and FSC® plywood, the nest box offers a robust and long-lasting alternative where natural nesting sites are limited or vulnerable to erosion and flooding.
Sand martins naturally excavate nesting tunnels in soft sand banks close to water. However, these habitats are increasingly under pressure from habitat loss, erosion, disturbance, and changing land management practices. Artificial nest boxes and sand martin walls can help provide secure nesting opportunities and support local breeding populations.
This nest box is suitable for installation within artificial sand martin walls, homemade nesting banks, and conservation projects near lakes, rivers, wetlands, and quarry sites. The long entrance tunnel leads to an enclosed nesting chamber, helping to mimic a natural burrow system.

Why are nest boxes important?
Natural nesting sites for many bird species are being lost due to habitat change, river engineering, building development, and land management practices. Artificial nesting habitats can help provide safe breeding opportunities and support declining populations.
Sand martins are particularly vulnerable to flooding and collapse of natural nesting banks during wet weather. Artificial nesting systems can provide more stable and secure breeding sites in suitable locations.

Siting
The Sand Martin Nest Box is ideally installed close to water bodies or in areas with exposed sandy habitats such as quarries and construction sites. It can be incorporated into a purpose-built artificial sand martin wall or a custom-made nesting bank.
When installed within a sand martin wall, the entrance tunnel should slope slightly upward towards the nesting chamber, with the entrance positioned horizontally and slightly off-centre at the bottom.
Artificial nesting walls can provide a safe alternative to unstable natural sandbanks and are particularly useful in areas where breeding colonies are vulnerable to disturbance or habitat loss.
Maintenance
The nest box should be cleaned annually after the breeding season, typically from October onwards. The rear access panel can be opened to remove old nesting material and check the condition of the chamber.

SITING: The nest box is ideal for use in artificial banks or cliffs, with walk-in access for cleaning the nest boxes or monitoring the breeding success of the birds for scientific research. Nest boxes are supported on internal battens with only the front of the box visible externally, creating the impression of a natural site. The Sand Martin bank is sited right on the shore and in the tests conducted by our specialists over 80% were used immediately, with many boxes being used for second broods. An artificial Sand Martin bank is also ideal for use in sand quarries where it can provide a safe refuge for the birds away from the working face and be used to show visitors the quarry’s commitment to nature conservation.
MAINTENANCE: The nest box must be cleaned once a year in the late autumn, starting in October.
