The Bee Brick is a simple, effective way to create nesting habitat for solitary bees within gardens, walls and buildings. Designed to be used either freestanding or built directly into brickwork, it replaces lost nesting sites and helps support vital pollinators in both urban and rural environments.

Suitable for red mason bees, leafcutter bees and other cavity-nesting species, the Bee Brick provides a safe, long-lasting nesting space without compromising the appearance or structure of a wall or building. Solitary bees account for around 90% of UK bee species and play a crucial role in pollination, yet many are in decline due to habitat loss.

Design & Use

The Bee Brick is solid at the back, ensuring bees do not enter buildings, and features moulded cavities at the front where bees lay their eggs. Entrances are sealed by the bees using mud or chewed vegetation. New bees emerge in spring and the nesting cycle begins again.

Solitary bees do not have a queen or produce honey and are non-swarming and non-aggressive, making them safe to encourage around children and pets.

Construction

The Bee Brick is designed to be integrated directly into brickwork as part of new builds, extensions or retrofit projects. Installed in place of a standard brick using mortar, it adds nesting habitat without changing the footprint, strength or appearance of a structure.

It can be used in external property walls, boundary walls and landscaping features, and is also suitable for use as a freestanding unit in gardens or allotments. The solid back ensures bees cannot enter the building fabric.

Siting & Installation

For best results, Bee Bricks should be installed in a warm, sunny position facing south or south-east, where they will receive morning sun. They should be positioned at least 1 metre above ground level, with no maximum height. Research has shown significantly higher uptake at heights above 1 metre.

Packaged & Unpackaged Options

The Bee Brick is available in two options:

  • Unpackaged: Supplied without individual packaging. Ideal for bulk orders and construction projects where reducing waste and on-site disposal is important.
  • Packaged: Each Bee Brick is supplied in a retail cardboard box and wrap, making it suitable for individual purchase, resale or gifting.

Fire Rating

The concrete used to manufacture the Bee Brick has been independently tested to EN 13501-1 and achieves an A1 fire classification. This confirms the material is non-combustible and does not contribute to fire growth or spread, making it suitable for use in buildings where fire performance is important.

Materials Made fom concrete, using up to 75% recycled material from the Cornish China clay industry.

Dimensions 215mm x 105mm x 65mm

Weight 2.9 kg (unpackaged)

Positioning The Bee Brick® should be positioned in a warm sunny spot, south facing, with no vegetation in front of the fascia. Ideally placed at least 1 metre from the ground with no upward limit.

Bee Brick® is solid at the back and has moulded cavities where the bees will lay their eggs, sealing the entrance with mud or chewed up vegetation. Offspring emerge in the Spring and begin the process of nesting again, repeating the cycle.

Solitary bees are facing a dramatic decline in numbers due to disease, an increase in chemical use and habitat loss. Pollinators account for 1/3 of the food we eat and are a vital part of our environment. The Bee Brick® can be used in urban spaces and places where there may not be alternative nesting sites for bees, either built into a wall or building or simply stood alone in a garden or allotment. Solitary bees are harmless and will not sting you unless you handle them roughly, even then their stings are not painful, meaning they are safe to encourage around pets and children.
